Arthritis refers to the painful inflammation and swelling of the joints. There are more than 100 forms of arthritis. The two most common forms are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is treated with analgesics and anti-inflammatory medicines. It is characterized by a continuous discomfort and is the result of normal wear and tear on the joints. Osteoarthritis is sometimes referred to as degenerative joint disease. It is the number one cause of disability in America because of its limiting effect on one's range of motion. In order to maintain function, an exercise program is important and should focus on range of motion and strengthening of muscles. Activities that involve quick movements should be avoided for those with osteoarthritis. The intensity of any exercise program will vary with the extent of the disease and the pain level.
