There are two types of diabetes: Type I and Type II. Type I generally affects young people and requires treatment with insulin injections. Type II is usually associated with adult onset and is non-insulin dependent. Diabetes is the fourth leading cause of death by disease in the U.S. and the No.1 chronic disease in children. Ninety to ninety-five percent of people with diabetes have Type II diabetes. Type II diabetes is on the increase in children. This increase coincides with the recent medical publications concerning an increase in overweight children and a lack of exercise. A regulated diet, systematic exercise, proper foot care, and controlled blood pressure are important factors to be considered when one receives the diagnosis of diabetes.
