Rheumatoid Arthritis is characterized by periods of high arthritic activity. Since rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition, it is treated with immunosuppressive agents and glucocorticoids. Rheumatoid arthritis is one of the most debilitating and deforming types of arthritis. The cause is unknown, but it is believed that the body's immune system attacks the tissue that lines the joints (synovium). A minimal amount of physical activity is suggested to avoid the effects of bed rest. An exercise program should be modified to minimize tissue damage or pain masked by medications. As with any exercise program, one should consult their health care professional before engaging in any activity.
